A Dragon Bedtime Story
Deep in the Whispering Woods, where the moss grew as soft as green velvet, lived a very special dragon named Barnaby. Barnaby was not a fierce dragon. He was the color of a dusty plum, with round, golden eyes and wings that felt like cozy flannel blankets. He loved two things most of all: starry nights and helping his forest friends fall asleep.
Every evening, as the golden sun dipped behind the purple hills, Barnaby would stretch his wings and begin his bedtime walk. The sky turned a deep, quiet blue, and the first silver stars began to blink. The evening air was cool, but Barnaby was always wonderfully warm.
His first stop was the great oak tree where the Hedgehog family lived. Papa Hedgehog was trying to tuck three wiggly little hoglets into their bed of dry leaves.
"Is it time for sleep yet, Barnaby?" whispered one of the little hedgehogs, yawning.
"Almost," Barnaby rumbled softly. His voice sounded like the low, happy purr of a giant, sleepy kitten.
Barnaby took a deep, slow breath. Instead of fire, he gently blew a soft cloud of warm, lavender-scented steam over the leafy bed. The little hedgehogs snuggled down, instantly cozy and warm. "Thank you, Barnaby," they murmured, their eyelids growing very heavy.
Next, Barnaby visited the squirrel nest high in the pine branches. He held up his long tail, which had a soft, glowing tip like a golden nightlight. He guided the sleepy squirrels into their nest, shining his gentle light so they could find their favorite pinecone pillows.
Now, the forest was quiet. The only sound was the night wind whispering through the tall pine needles. It was Barnaby's turn to rest.
He walked to his favorite clearing, where the grass was thick and fragrant. He curled up in a neat, round circle, tucking his tail around his toes. Above him, the moon shone like a giant silver nightlight, casting soft shadows on the forest floor.
Barnaby began to hum a gentle, rumbling lullaby. The sweet sound drifted through the trees, a soft melody that made the bluebells sway in a quiet, sleepy rhythm.
He closed his golden eyes. He felt warm, safe, and happy. The forest was peaceful, wrapped in the dark, gentle blanket of the night. Barnaby drifted off to sleep, breathing out tiny, warm puffs of starlight that floated up to join the sky.
