An Underwater Bedtime Story
Barnaby was a little green sea turtle with a shell the color of moss and eyes as bright as pennies. Every night, before he tucked his flippers in for sleep, he liked to take one gentle swim through Coral Cove. The water was always warm, wrapping around him like a soft, liquid blanket.
Tonight, the ocean was especially quiet. The only sound was the soft hush-hush of the tide sliding over the sandy floor. Barnaby nudged his nose out of his cozy sandy bed and floated upward, drifting on a warm, lazy current.
Hello, Barnaby, whispered a soft voice.
It was Shimmer, a tiny jellyfish who floated like a pale pink balloon. Shimmer did not sting; she only glowed. Tonight, she was shining with a soft, peach-colored light that made the bubbles around her look like drifting pearls.
Are you ready for the night-lights? Shimmer asked, her voice like bubbles popping in slow motion.
I am, Barnaby replied, giving his back flippers a gentle kick.
Together, the two friends floated toward the deep coral reef. During the day, the reef was busy and loud. But at night, the corals began to dream. They glowed in sleepy shades of lavender, mint green, and pale buttercup yellow.
A family of striped clownfish were already tucked inside their soft sea anemone, yawning tiny bubbles. A large, friendly blue octopus named Oliver waved one lazy tentacle from his rocky cave, his eyes half-closed.
Goodnight, little turtle, Oliver murmured, his voice deep and rumbling like the far-off tide.
Suddenly, a beautiful sound drifted through the warm water. It was a low, musical hum that vibrated gently in Barnaby's shell. It was the song of the great blue whales, singing their bedtime lullaby from the deep ocean. The song was slow and sweet, repeating the same comforting notes over and over.
Barnaby felt his eyelids growing very heavy. The gentle swaying of the water felt like a rocking cradle. The soft lights of the coral reef began to dim, one by one, like candles being gently blown out.
Time for sleep, Shimmer whispered, her pink light softening into a sleepy pastel glow.
Goodnight, Shimmer, Barnaby yawned, a tiny bubble escaping his mouth.
He drifted back down to his favorite patch of soft, emerald seagrass. The grass tickled his tummy in a comforting way. Barnaby tucked his flippers close to his shell and rested his chin on the cool sand. He closed his eyes, listening to the hum of the whale song and the gentle sway of the sea. Safe and warm, the little turtle drifted off to sleep.
